Summary

Both Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg came to Google as seasoned Silicon Valley business executives, but over the course of a decade they came to see the wisdom in Coach John Wooden's observation that 'it's what you learn after you know it all that counts'。 As they helped grow Google from a young start-up to a global icon, they relearned everything they knew about management。 How Google Works is the sum of those experiences distilled into a fun, easy-to-read primer on corporate culture, strategy, talent, decision-making, communication, innovation, and dealing with disruption。

The authors explain how the confluence of three seismic changes - the internet, mobile, and cloud computing - has shifted the balance of power from companies to consumers。 The companies that will thrive in this ever-changing landscape will be the ones that create superior products and attract a new breed of multifaceted employees whom the authors dub 'smart creatives'。 The management maxims ('Consensus requires dissension', 'Exile knaves but fight for divas', 'Think 10X, not 10%') are illustrated with previously unreported anecdotes from Google's corporate history。

'Back in 2010, Eric and I created an internal class for Google managers,' says Rosenberg。 'The class slides all read 'Google confidential' until an employee suggested we uphold the spirit of openness and share them with the world。 This book codifies the recipe for our secret sauce: how Google innovates and how it empowers employees to succeed。'

Book justified its title and gave a reasonable overview of how things work at Google。 Resonated with concepts like 'Focus on the user', 'Don't be evil', 'Don't listen to HiPPOs', 'Technical Insight a key ingredient for any new product/feature', and '20-percent time'。 Not completely convinced about things like 'Keep them crowded', 'Messiness is virtue', 'Overworked in good way'。 Can't wait to see this all in action :) Book justified its title and gave a reasonable overview of how things work at Google。 Resonated with concepts like 'Focus on the user', 'Don't be evil', 'Don't listen to HiPPOs', 'Technical Insight a key ingredient for any new product/feature', and '20-percent time'。 Not completely convinced about things like 'Keep them crowded', 'Messiness is virtue', 'Overworked in good way'。 Can't wait to see this all in action :) 。。。more

A classic read from the best of the minds on how to develop a company。 A lot of thought went into writing the book as there are numerous examples backing each of the theory put forth。 Time and again, it explains why Google is one of a kind in the way it works but more importantly it throws light on the steps not to take as well。 A must for anyone planning to start a company or lead one!

An enjoyable read about the culture and management practices of the early days at Google, it puts much emphasis on "smart creatives", brilliant and generalist high performers, hiring them and getting out of the way。 The question left unanswered would be whether this management style applies with a less elite workforce, or is it simply the new default style for the new generation of employees? Really good book。Honestly I thought it would be more in depth about products but it was still really good。 Almost like Netflix No Rules Rules。 It's about the culture of Google。。。it will motivate you to be a better worker and human。 Really good book。Honestly I thought it would be more in depth about products but it was still really good。 Almost like Netflix No Rules Rules。 It's about the culture of Google。。。it will motivate you to be a better worker and human。 。。。more

A decent book。 Although there are lots of things I already learned somewhere else about the culture of Google (Alphabet), it's still good to review all of them by going through these pages。 A decent book。 Although there are lots of things I already learned somewhere else about the culture of Google (Alphabet), it's still good to review all of them by going through these pages。 。。。more

Despite not being what I expected, this book is great。 I thought it would go the Computer Science route, but it went the Business Management route instead。

Full of surface level generics that apply to any business。 I was hoping to get some insight from this on how Google does it DIFFERENTLY but got little, other than a few stories that actually were not too different from anywhere else。Imo google is google because of a couple things:- incredibly open culture- luck and already having a ton of money to work with- many structures that exist in the corporate world that everyone agrees sucks don’t exist and/or aren’t as bad。 For the most part they have Full of surface level generics that apply to any business。 I was hoping to get some insight from this on how Google does it DIFFERENTLY but got little, other than a few stories that actually were not too different from anywhere else。Imo google is google because of a couple things:- incredibly open culture- luck and already having a ton of money to work with- many structures that exist in the corporate world that everyone agrees sucks don’t exist and/or aren’t as bad。 For the most part they have managed to keep the penny pushers away, such as - flat management - final decision only defaults to higher ups if there’s no data, otherwise anyone can bring the final say - better understanding of treating people as humans with personal goals outside of work。 If the team windsurfs right next to work on Fridays and enjoys each other, guess how much ass they’ll be kicking together on the product? It's interesting。 Some unique anecdotes about the early days and the "Google way to do things。" But most of it is just echo chamber hype from Eric about how great he and Google are。 I'm not sure what else I expected, but it really seemed one sided。 It's interesting。 Some unique anecdotes about the early days and the "Google way to do things。" But most of it is just echo chamber hype from Eric about how great he and Google are。 I'm not sure what else I expected, but it really seemed one sided。 。。。more
